Kaldi – A Coffee Story

The birth of coffee is often traced back to a legend from 9th century Ethiopia. A goat herder named Kaldi had noticed that members of his flock were extremely energetic and refused to sleep at night after eating some red berries. He then tried some of the berries and was similarly affected. He shared his discovery with some local Sufi monks. They originally thought the berries were the devil’s candy and tossed them into the fire. Soon after the room was filled with an amazing aroma. The monks quickly raked out what remained of the berries out of the fire. They crushed them to put out the embers. Mixed with water, they produced a potent beverage that sustained their focus through hours of evening prayers. In their pilgrimage, these monks brought their discovery to the rest of the Arab world. The beverage became known in Arabic as Qahhwat al-bun – Wine of the Bean.
